Surface Complete!

The surface asphalt was completed on Monday, October 8. All that remains now are a few spots that need sod and the retaining wall.

Surface Notice

The Contractor is scheduled to place the surface level of asphalt on Monday, October 8, 2007 (weather permitting). For this process, a prime coat (sticky tack) will be placed on the existing surface in order to create a bond between the binder and surface levels of pavement. This tack is very sticky and if driven over, can track onto your driveways. The prime coat will be applied at approximately 5:00 A.M. on Monday morning. It takes a couple of hours to cure. However, to avoid any damage to vehicles or driveways, we strongly recommend you park on surrounding streets beginning Sunday evening if you will need your car Monday morning. As soon as the surface is placed and compacted, you will be allowed to drive on it. ALSO, please allow extra time for possible delays as you leave/return to your homes.

Sod and Retaining Wall

A. Lamp began placing sod this morning and should be done by Friday.

Work has begun on the Modular Retaining Wall at the corner of Greenview and Arlington Heights. This should take all week to complete.

Once both these tasks are complete, the final lift of asphalt will be placed. As of right now, that is scheduled for Monday, October 8.

Nearing the end...

Only a few tasks are left to complete the project: parkway restoration and the final lift of asphalt. If the weather stays like it is now (cool and gorgeous!) A. Lamp will plan on placing sod sometime next week with asphalt the following week.

Alley Complete!

The alley was paved with both binder and surface yesterday, just in time for the rain. Everything looks great. The contractor will do a small amount of parkway restoration to clean up the edges.

What's a structure adjustment?
All the structures (manholes) that are in the roadway were covered by the binder level of asphalt. The contractor comes back in, digs up the structure covers and raises them to the appropriate height, closing in the hole with concrete. So until the surface level is placed, the structure frames will be slightly higher than the road.

Alley Update

Unfortunately, the contractor was unable to pave the alley yesterday as scheduled. The date has been pushed back to sometime next week. We will notify you as soon as we have been informed of the date.

The contractor has been instructed to ramp the entrance to the alley and all driveways. The alley has also been compacted and is drivable. However, if you wish to park on the street, that will be allowed. The Itasca Police Department has been notified of the schedule. If you plan to park on the street, please notify the Police Department, giving your name, address, vehicle make, model, and license plate number for safety. The PD non-emergency telephone number is (630) 773-1004. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Greenview Road and Briar Place Update

As I am sure you noticed, the binder level of asphalt has been placed, completed yesterday. The contractor will be performing parkway restoration and manhole adjustments over the next several days and then the surface level of asphalt will be placed. When we know the schedule for surface placement, we will inform you. When the asphalt work is being done, we recommend that you park on other streets for the day. The contractor will be placing a prime coat (sticky tack) down before paving. This tack can stick to your vehicle wheels and track onto your driveways. Once again, we will send out a notice with further instructions once the date has been set.

REGARDING SPRINKLER SYSTEMS:We have been informed of two places where the sprinkler system was broken (711 Greenview Road and 405 Briar Place). If any other sprinkler systems have been broken due to the construction, please contact Kerry Megraw with your address and number of breaks. Due to the amount of rain in the area over the past week, paving has been pushed back to next week. As of right now, the binder will be placed on Wednesday of next week (Aug. 22). Thank you to all the residents for their patience and cooperation. I wish that asphalt was down all ready, it is just completely impossible with all the water!

Paving Schedule/Alley Resurfacing

The contractor will be placing stone on Wednesday, August 22, 2007 and placing the binder level of asphalt on Thursday.

The alley will be milled (asphalt removed) on Wednesday and paved on Thursday.

Concrete Work Complete

A. Lamp has completed all concrete operations. The last batch of driveway aprons (poured on Wednesday, August 15) will be drive-able on Saturday, August 18.

The asphalt subcontractor is tentatively scheduled to come next week to place the remaining stone lift, followed by binder!

Wednesday, August 8: Remove driveway ramps and set string line for curb installation on the North side of Greenview and the East side of Briar Place.

Thursday, August 9: Pour curb on above locations.

Friday, August 10: Remove, frame and pour driveways on above locations.

Monday, August 13: Access to driveways on above locations restored.

Please remember: this is a tentative schedule and always possible to change. The biggest factor is the weather, and this rain isn't helping out right now. We will do the best we can to keep everyone informed!

The contractor asks that residents park on nearby streets on the day they pour curb. Once the curb is poured, residents are allowed to park on that street.

Installing Curb & Gutter

As you may have noticed, the contractor installed curb and gutter on the south side of Greenview. Once the curb & gutter is installed, the contractor will remove and replace driveways and sidewalk (only some sidewalk is being removed and replaced). Once the driveway is poured, it will be 3 days before you should drive on it.

Why so deep?

Many residents have asked why the contractor is excavating so deep. The road is not being lowered as much as it may appear right now. There are areas where the road IS being lowered 6 to 12 inches from where it was. In those areas, the cut seems even deeper. The reasoning behind such a deep cut is something called an "under cut." Some soil is considered unsuitable or unstable; this is usually black dirt. When the subgrade (what's below the road and stone) is considered unsuitable or unstable, we under cut it. In this case, one foot below subgrade. That under cut is then filled with 3" stone to create a stronger subgrade. If the road does not need an under cut, then it just gets filled with smaller sized stone.

Either way, the top of curb (where your grass meets the curb) to the bottom of the smaller sized stone that goes everywhere (under cut or not) measures 20". When we add one foot of under cut, we're talking 36" (three feet!). And that is why it seems so deep.

Excavating Greenview

A. Lamp began milling Greenview today. They will begin on Briar tomorrow, July 19. Access to driveways will be maintained. There may be short periods of time between milling and placing the temporary ramp to the driveway, but all driveways will have access by the end of the day.

Change in schedule

The schedule for construction has changed. The contractor will be grinding the pavement from Greenview Road and Briar Place starting on Tuesday, July 17, 2007. This will be followed by the excavation and removal of stone and subgrade from Greenview, commencing on Thursday, July 19, 2007. Access will remain on both streets with periodic closures of driveways and the roadway.

Once the street has been excavated, the contractor will install curb and gutter on one side of Greenview. Only after this has been done will excavation begin on Briar Place. Residents will receive notice before work begins on any curb and gutter.

Curb & Gutter Installation

A. Lamp will begin excavating for curb and gutter on Friday (July 13) or Monday (July 16). They will complete one side of each street before beginning the other side. They will start with the North side of Greenview and the East side of Briar. Residents on those sides are asked to park on the other side of the street. Police should be notified of vehicle information, and cars will be allowed to park on the street overnight.

Order of Operations for Curb and Gutter (C&G):

Excavate area for C&G
Driveways temporarily ramped with stone until concrete is poured
Pour concrete
3 days (72 hours) of cure time required before cars will be allowed to drive onto driveway

Storm Sewer Completion

The contractor is almost complete with the main line of the storm sewer. Once complete, they will install all the catch basins and inlets which are located in the curb line.

A. Lamp began installing storm sewer on Friday, June 15. They started at Center and Cherry and will procede along Greenview and then Briar.

Gate valve

This is a picture of a gate valve (on its side), which we are using on the project (there are many different types of water main valves). In a public water system, valves can be closed to shut off the water supply to an isolated area if any maintenance needs to be performed . This way, the entire village doesn't have to be without water, only one small area.

After years and years of being in the ground with no protection from dirt and water, the valves of the watermain in the area have experienced a little wear and tear. We are going through and replacing each valve and placing it in a valve vault. A valve vault is just that: a large structure that houses the valve, making it easier for the Water Department to maintain, and helping protect the valve from erosion. This picture shows a new valve at the corner of Center Street and Cherry Street. The reason the water has to be shut off is because we literally have to cut the main in order to replace the valve.

Construction has begun and is going smoothly. The contractor is replacing water valves and fire hydrants along the water main, as well as installing some new hydrants. This should take two to three more days (weather permitting) and then storm sewer installation will begin.

WATER MAIN SHUT DOWN

During the replacement of existing water valves and installation of fire hydrants, the main needs to be shut down in the area. Water will be shut off from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. Wednesday-Friday of this week (June 6-June 9), and all of next week.

A. Lamp began with tree protection and tree root pruning last week. Underground work should begin by the end of this week. First water main valve replacements, followed by storm sewer installation.

Construction will begin Tuesday, May 29, 2007. However, you won't see much construction until the week of June 4. The first week is preparatory operations, with storm sewer installation/water main construction tentatively set to begin June 4.
